Durban s fame for being a holiday destination cannot bedenied but it also offers several events that are known throughout the world and people flock to its shores to experience these events.

One of the most famous is the Comrades marathon. Run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the race distance is 89 kilometres. The Comrades marathon is classed as an ultra-marathon and is believed to be the largest and oldest ultra-marathon in the world. The race was first run in 1921 and won by Bill Rowan in 8 hours and 59 minutes. That year there were 48 entrants of whom only 34 started and 16 finished. In the year 2000, the Comrades marathon celebrated 75 years and just under 24,000 runners entered the race. In that year the winning time was 5 hours and 25 minutes.

The Dusi River canoe or kayak race is arguably the most popular race of its kind in the world with the first race of the twenty first century attracting over 2000 competitors. The course, originally conceived by Ian Player, was to be between Pietermaritzburg and Durban and would be more than 120 kilometres down the uMsindusi and uMgeni Rivers. The first race was held in December 1950 with 8 competitors including Ian Player. Ian Player was the only canoeist to finish and it took him more than 6 days to complete the course. These days the race is held over 3 days with compulsory stops each day and the overall time to complete is a little over 8 hours.

The third epic event that occurs every winter in Durban is the arrival of the Greatest Shoal . Known locally as the Sardine run, millions of sardines set off from the Agulhas Bank in the Cape and head north up the east coast of South Africa. The sardine run brings with it an impressive list of nature s aquatic predators all looking for an easy meal. Whales, Dolphins, Sharks, a variety of game fish and of course sea birds all follow the sardines along the route. The sardine run can be viewed from a boat, plane or helicopter and even the shore. For some inexplicable reason, often the sardines beach themselves especially just south of Durban allowing thousands of excited people the chance to get food for the table or fresh bait.
